‘Yaaro neeyo’ marks Benny Dayal’s return to independent Tamil music

Singer, songwriter and composer Benny Dayal makes a strong return to Tamil independent music with his new single, ‘Yaaro neeyo’, released worldwide on August 18. The track revolves around love, longing, and memories, and is backed by Prito Intiacandy’s production, with lyrics by Vignesh Ramakrishnan.

Moving beyond playback singing, Benny says the inspiration behind the track was his desire to create something in Tamil. “I wanted to make something that was honest and intimate, something that people could relate to and make their own, irrespective of where they were in their lives,” he says.

“Also, this entire Amapiano sound is really beautiful. It has a refreshing Afro-inspired feel. Bringing Tamil lyrics and Amapiano together felt wonderful. And with ‘Yaaro neeyo’, I am also entering the EP space,” he adds.

The voice behind several chartbusters in Hindi and Tamil, the singer picks a few favourites, including ‘Kaise mujhe tum mil gayi’, ‘O mere pindey’, ‘Tarkeebein’, ‘Badtameez dil’, and ‘Let’s nacho’. He counts Michael Jackson, A.R. Rahman, Bruno Mars, Yusuf Ali Khan, Yesudas, Chitra, and Ilaiyaraaja among his inspirations, and says that despite all the ups and downs, his ability to make a mark in the industry makes him happy.

Up next, Benny has a new album, South the Horizon, in the works, besides a series of independent music shows featuring different artistes. He is set to perform in Chennai on October 3, with singers Andrea Jeremiah and Shruti Haasan joining him on stage. Benny will also be seen as a judge on Sony’s ‘Tamil Idol’, the first Tamil edition of the ‘Indian Idol’ franchise, alongside Karthik and Andrea. Having earlier mentored contestants on Airtel Super Singer on Vijay TV, Benny says he is looking forward to discovering new talent from Tamil Nadu.
