A surprise late-night alliance is taking shape, with Stephen Colbert backing fellow Donald Trump critic Jimmy Kimmel in the Emmy race — despite The Late Show competing in the very same category. In an Instagram video posted on August 25, the bearded Colbert urged viewers to vote for Jimmy Kimmel Live! for Outstanding Variety Series, joking that he was “at the end of the world.” Colbert’s own show landed nine Emmy nominations, the biggest haul of his 11-year tenure. His endorsement also appears to return the favor after Kimmel backed Colbert following CBS’ decision to cancel The Late Show, even putting up a Los Angeles billboard reading “I’m voting for Stephen.” Now, the two Trump critics are once again sharing the spotlight as The Late Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, The Daily Show and Saturday Night Live battle for the Emmy.
