Pune: An IIT-BHU graduate (25) pursuing MTech in a defence technology institute died after she fell from a PMPML bus and was run over by a school bus on Sinhagad Road in the city’s Anandnagar area on Monday morning.Inspector Sameer Gaikwad of the Sinhagad Road police identified the deceased as Kanchan Balwant Khadda (25), originally from Hanumangarh in Rajasthan. Police quoted passers-by as saying the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Ltd (PMPML) bus was crowded.“Khadda had completed her engineering degree from IIT-Banaras Hindu University and was in her second year of MTech in semiconductor chip design at Defence Institute of Advanced Technology (DIAT) in the Girinagar area near Khadakwasla. She was staying in a hostel on the DIAT premises,” Gaikwad said.“On Monday, Khadda was travelling from Khadakwasla to the DRDO laboratory in Dighi for a practical session. Around 9.45am, she fell through the front door of the PMPML bus. At the same time, a school bus overtaking the PMPML bus ran over her. She was taken to a nearby hospital. Doctors in the hospital said she succumbed to her injuries during treatment,” the officer said.Police informed her parents and DIAT officials about the accident. “Khadda was aspiring to pursue PhD and had started her preparations. We are yet to ascertain how she fell from the bus,” Gaikwad said.PMPML public relations officer Kishor Chauhan said, “Our checker visited the accident spot. Three or four girls had moved towards the front door of the bus as they were to get off at the approaching stop. As the bus stopped and the doors opened, the girl apparently felt dizzy and fell onto the road. A school bus on the left ran over her.”He said, “Our bus, travelling from Khanapur to Swargate, was carrying a large number of passengers. We are trying to find out how the accident occurred. There are standing instructions that drivers and conductors of PMPML buses must ensure that both doors of buses in transit are shut.”Inspector Gaikwad said Khadda’s parents were yet to reach the city. Both the bus drivers were sent to Sassoon General Hospital for medical examination.
