New Delhi: Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has secured the extradition of fugitive drug kingpin Virender Singh Basoya from UAE under Operation Global Hunt, marking a major victory in India’s crackdown on transnational drug cartels. Detained in June via an Interpol Red Notice, Basoya was linked to Delhi’s biggest cocaine seizure of Rs 13,000 crore, besides other major cases.Union home minister Amit Shah praised the seamless execution of the operation, emphasising that Modi govt was relentlessly targeting drug traffickers who attempt to hide abroad. “Creating a new milestone in the policy of zero tolerance against narcotics, NCB secured the return of fugitive drug kingpin Virender Singh Basoya from UAE… Our agencies have once again proven that no matter where drug traffickers hide, they cannot escape the long arm of Indian law,” Shah posted on X.Basoya, whose repatriation followed months of sustained operational coordination, was taken into custody immediately upon his arrival at the Delhi airport. He was produced before court and taken on remand for investigation.A resident of Pillanji in south Delhi’s Sarojini Nagar, Basoya had left the law enforcement flummoxed after it emerged that he was carrying out illicit drug trafficking activities from the heart of the city. The probe revealed Basoya had played an essential role in financing, procuring, storing and shipping these consignments, and functioning as a vital link in the cartel’s global chain.Basoya fled to Dubai once agencies started a crackdown. He allegedly boarded a flight to Dubai just after his son’s wedding to the daughter of a former UP MLA. After a Delhi court issued a non-bailable warrant, Indian agencies initiated red notices and pursued extradition proceedings through diplomatic and international policing channels in UAE.Basoya’s criminal footprint spans multiple massive drug seizures across India. His primary involvement surfaced during an investigation that originated in Pune in Feb 2024, when local police initially seized a modest 500-gram consignment of mephedrone. Law enforcement agencies traced the network’s supply chains across state borders, eventually executing massive recoveries of approximately 867kg mephedrone in Pune and another 970kg in Delhi.The combined seizure led to the transfer of the case to NCB. Investigators identified Basoya as the chief overseas operative, who coordinated syndicate activities from abroad, connecting domestic manufacturing centres with international distribution networks. A major portion of the Delhi consignment was allegedly earmarked for export to foreign destinations through courier channels directly linked to him.Basoya was simultaneously identified as a prime figure in a separate multi-state cocaine trafficking cartel busted by Delhi Police’s special cell in Oct 2024. The operation targeted illicit storage and manufacturing facilities across Delhi, Hapur, Ghaziabad, and a factory in Ankleshwar, Gujarat. The raids yielded more than 1,300kg cocaine.Police sought red notices against Basoya and his son Rishabh while initiating the ‘trial in absentia’ procedure against them in court. By mapping local street distribution networks upward while simultaneously intercepting high-level financial and logistical chains, NCB successfully pinpointed Basoya’s foreign hideout.NCB plans to interrogate him regarding international supply routes, financial money-laundering channels and local accomplices linked to the multi-crore drug cartel.
