Shashikant Kulkarni, a retired school teacher, was a relieved man when his son from the US ordered a fresh non-veg meal for his pet dog in India. The food was not only delivered but also fed to the dog and taken for a walk by the trainer.
“Feeding my son’s pet with non-veg food was a challenge since we do not cook non-veg food at home. It has become an issue, particularly, after my son left for the US recently leaving his pet with us,” said Kulkarni.
Thanks to WAGR, pet parents in Mumbai Metropolitan Region can not only find delicious food for their pets but also trainers, doctors, walkers and ambulance services.
Late last year, Fredun Pharmaceuticals acquired a 78 per cent stake in Wagr, the pet-tech platform, to make it the one-stop shop for all pet parents.

Fredun N Medhora, Director, WAGR said pet-parenting meals of 150-200 plates are made to order and delivered across the MMR region. A plate of fresh dog meal costs about ₹120-₹350.
“We are also going to add therapeutic diets in our next phase of planning,” said Medhora, who is one of the promoters of Fredun Pharamaceuticals which owns WAGR.
The idea is to develop Wagr as a market place for all pet-related products including ambulance service and diagnostic centre for pets across Mumbai, he added.
In fact, Wagr’s parent company Fredun Pharmaceuticals operates a dedicated Fredna Vet Diagnostics in Mumbai.

Wagr will be a neutral platform for selling pets and pet products, services, depository to get groomers, trainers, dog walkers, doctors and round-the-clock help service for pet parents, especially a first time pet parent, said Medhora.
“A cat parent will have various other specific needs from a dog parent. Some exotics, such as birds, rabbits and squirrels will have different issues. We have a centralised solution and a one-stop idea where pet parents connect and find solutions,” he said.
Wagr has just started the beta version in June and has registered 150,000 pet parents on the website.
“Our main central warehouse is in Bhiwandi, but our partner warehouses and logistics are available from Chandigarh to Visakhapatnam to Bangalore and across North India,” he added.

In smaller cities, pet parents have bigger dogs which eat about twice or thrice the amount of food that a small dog eats. Moreover, all the top breeders are from smaller cities as they require space for breeding, said Medhora.
