Patna: Bihar is set to undergo an urban transformation as the state govt plans high-impact development projects across all urban local bodies (ULBs), including municipal corporations, municipal councils and nagar panchayats. As part of the initiative, every urban local body will develop a 1–2 kilometre-long “Signature Road” to serve as a landmark while strengthening civic infrastructure and improving public spaces.Urban development and housing minister Nitish Mishra announced on Wednesday that the govt has identified both short-term and long-term development targets to improve urban infrastructure and enhance the quality of life for residents. The initiative is aligned with chief minister Samrat Choudhary’s vision of making every city in Bihar modern, well-planned, clean, green and equipped with world-class civic amenities.The minister said all ULBs have been directed to identify and implement short-term projects that can be completed by October 2026. The focus will be on fast project selection, timely administrative approvals and strict adherence to execution schedules to ensure citizens receive benefits within the stipulated timeframe.Alongside these immediate goals, municipal bodies have also been instructed to select and execute long-term projects targeted for completion by Dec 2028. Mishra said priority will be given to projects with the highest public impact so that improved civic services and strengthened urban infrastructure benefit the largest number of residents.A key feature of the plan is the development of a Signature Road in every city. These roads will undergo comprehensive upgrades, including road widening, landscaping, modern street lighting, green belts, tree plantation and other essential civic facilities. The govt intends to transform these stretches into iconic urban corridors that reflect the identity of their respective towns and cities.Municipal bodies have also been asked to identify sufficiently wide roads that can support beautification, plantation drives and, wherever feasible, well-planned night markets. According to the minister, such developments will create attractive and safe public spaces, boost local businesses and increase economic activity while enhancing the overall appearance of urban areas.The minister said that the state government is committed to accelerating urban development through time-bound, citizen-focused and high-impact projects to make Bihar’s cities cleaner, more modern, more attractive and more liveable.
