Madhubani: District administration has stepped up efforts to strengthen the power infrastructure amid rising electricity demand in Madhubani’s urban areas, driven by ongoing development activities.District magistrate (DM) Anand Sharma on Thursday reviewed the district’s power situation, ongoing network augmentation works and the progress of new power sub-stations (PSS) during a meeting with electricity department officials.According to officials, urban power consumption has increased by around 4MW compared to last year. Power input in the Madhubani Electricity Supply Division has also recorded steady growth, rising from 4.02 crore units in April 2026 to 4.48 crore units in May, 5.51 crore units in June and 6.13 crore units in July this year.The urban electricity load has risen from 17MW in July 2025 to 21 MW in July 2026 and further to 21.6MW in Aug 2026. The existing PSS, which has a capacity of 27MW, is currently operating at nearly 80% load.To meet the growing demand, a 10 MVA power transformer has already been installed and is expected to be commissioned within a week. In addition, the urban PSS has been linked to an additional 33 kV line, allowing power supply from both Madhubani GSS and Pandaul GSS through separate routes, improving reliability, the officials said.Executive engineer (electricity) Md Arman said, “Land has been made available at four locations for new PSS projects in the urban area. Construction has already begun at Basuara, Medical College, Laheriaganj and Ahmad Nagar. The proposed substations are expected to benefit around 8,000, 9,000, 8,000 and 7,000 consumers, respectively.”The DM directed officials to complete all ongoing and proposed projects within stipulated timelines and stressed the need to expand power infrastructure in line with rising demand. He said the new substations, additional 33 kV line and 10 MVA transformer would enhance the capacity and dependability of power supply in the town.Sharma added that setting up substations in all four directions of the urban area would improve service delivery, benefit a larger number of consumers and enable quicker resolution of local power-related issues.
