Vastu mistakes in the kitchen which can lead to health issues

When we talk about kitchen Vastu, the conversation usually begins with one question: “Which direction should the kitchen be in?”But a kitchen is much more than its direction. It is one of the most active spaces in a house. Food is stored, prepared and served there every day. So I prefer looking at kitchen Vastu at three levels: the physical space, the objects we keep there and the emotional environment in which food is prepared.Sometimes, the mistakes are surprisingly ordinary.

1. Keeping broken or chipped utensils

That slightly cracked cup you still use. The plate with a chipped corner. The container whose lid hasn’t worked properly for six months. We keep these things because they are still “usable”.From a Vastu perspective, I prefer removing broken, cracked or badly damaged utensils from regular use. Your kitchen is associated with nourishment and abundance. Objects that have already completed their useful life don’t need to occupy that space indefinitely.Repair what can be repaired. Replace what cannot.

2. Keeping medicines beside spices or food

Medicines deserve their own designated space.Avoid casually keeping tablets, syrups and medicine strips next to spices, groceries or ingredients used for everyday cooking. Apart from practical considerations such as storage instructions, accidental mix-ups and keeping medicines away from children, I prefer maintaining a clear distinction between food meant for nourishment and medicines meant for specific health needs.Create a separate, organised medicine cabinet wherever possible.

3. Choosing kitchen colours without considering direction or date of birth

A beautiful kitchen is not automatically a Vastu-aligned kitchen.Red, black, blue, green, white or yellow can completely change the character of a space. I don’t recommend selecting kitchen tiles, cabinets or dominant wall colours simply because a particular shade is trending. In my approach, the colour should be evaluated according to the direction of the kitchen as well as the Date of Birth of the primary occupants. This becomes especially important because tiles and cabinets are not things you change every six months. Once installed, that colour becomes part of the environment for years.

4. Keeping too many unused containers

Every Indian kitchen probably has one cupboard dedicated to containers whose lids disappeared several years ago.Storage is useful. Accumulation is different. If containers, bottles, jars and boxes haven’t been used for a long time, review them. Keep what genuinely serves a purpose and remove what simply occupies space. You don’t need twenty empty boxes because they might become useful someday.

5. Entering the kitchen with negative thoughts

This is where kitchen Vastu moves beyond physical arrangement. If you’ve just had an argument, are extremely angry or are mentally disturbed, give yourself a few minutes before beginning to cook.Wash your hands and face. Drink some water. Settle yourself. You don’t need to become perfectly peaceful every time you enter the kitchen. But food preparation should not become an extension of the anger you’re carrying.

6. Gossiping while cooking

Cooking time has quietly become phone-call time for many people. And sometimes those calls involve complaining, criticising relatives, discussing someone’s personal life or repeatedly speaking negatively about another person.I prefer keeping such conversations away from the kitchen.Talk. Laugh. Discuss your day. Listen to something pleasant. But don’t make gossip another ingredient in the meal.

7. Watching negative content while cooking

This is perhaps the most modern kitchen Vastu mistake.Crime videos. Disturbing news. Violent content. Heated debates. Negative reels. The mobile phone has brought all of them directly beside the stove. If you enjoy listening to something while cooking, choose soft music, mantra, an uplifting podcast or simply silence. Not every moment needs digital stimulation.Your Kitchen Has Two Kinds of HygieneWe already understand physical hygiene.Clean vegetables. Clean utensils. Fresh ingredients. Clean counters. But there is another layer worth thinking about:Emotional hygiene. What are you thinking while preparing food? What conversations are happening? What are you watching? What objects have accumulated around you?And what kind of environment are you creating around something your family will eventually consume?Kitchen Vastu is not only about finding the perfect direction for your stove.Sometimes it begins with something much simpler:Clear the broken. Organise the unnecessary. Choose the environment consciously. And cook with a calmer mind.
