Patna: A newly married couple was killed after a speeding truck hit and ran over their motorcycle on the Bihta-Sarmera road near Lakhna village under Gaurichak police station area in Patna late on Saturday night. The truck driver fled the spot, triggering protests by local residents.Police said Suraj Malakar (27), and his wife Kajal Kumari (25), were travelling towards Kansari village when the truck struck their motorcycle. The impact threw the couple on the road, and the truck ran over them, killing both on the spot. The deceased were residents of Baravan village under Naubatpur police station area.The incident sparked outrage among villagers, who blocked the Bihta-Sarmera road and demanded the immediate arrest of the driver.

Traffic remained disrupted for some time.When police personnel reached the spot and tried to clear the blockade, some protesters allegedly turned violent and vandalised a police vehicle. Additional forces from nearby police stations were deployed, and the blockade was lifted after talks with local residents.Family members said the couple had got married barely three months ago and were returning home after visiting Kajal’s parental house.Gaurichak SHO Suman Kumar said the bodies were sent for post-mortem. “Police teams are conducting raids at possible hideouts to trace the absconding truck driver. An FIR has also been registered against those involved in vandalising the police vehicle during the protest,” he said.No arrests have been made so far in connection with either the accident or the vandalism, police said.
