Panaji: State govt will collect segregated dry waste from over 450 schools, colleges and higher secondary schools across three talukas as part of a project to keep educational premises clean and improve waste recovery.The project, described by govt as secondary collection and transportation of segregated non-biodegradable dry waste, will cover educational institutions as well as village panchayats and other organisations across all 12 talukas and three districts. More than 160 village panchayats will be covered.At educational institutions, waste will be collected in four separate fractions: paper and cardboard, recyclable plastic, non-recyclable waste, and glass and metal.A senior govt officer said collection would also be carried out from additional collection points identified at the discretion of the Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC). Vehicles used for the service will be enclosed goods vehicles to ensure safe transportation to designated baling stations, solid waste management facilities or other sheds and sites specified by the GWMC.“The collection points shall be located at various locations across the state. The detailed tentative list of collection points shall be provided by GWMC, and it reserves the right to add, modify, or relocate collection points, as may be required,” the officer said.Each panchayat will be covered at least eight times a month, with collections operating from 8am to 6pm, except on Sundays and public holidays.“Any collection request shall be addressed within 48 hours of receipt. Collection from educational institutions will be carried out on a fixed weekly schedule once every 7 days per institution, taluka-wise,” the officer said.Institutions generating larger quantities of waste may receive more frequent collections as directed by the GWMC.If a collection is missed due to a public holiday, it must be completed within the next two working days without disrupting the regular schedule. During official vacations, collections from educational institutions will be made on a request-only basis.The waste will be transported to designated baling stations, SWM facilities, or other sites specified by the GWMC. The corporation will select a bidder to operate the project and ensure complete clearance of accumulated non-biodegradable waste during each scheduled visit.“If waste volume exceeds the vehicle capacity, deploy additional vehicles or conduct back-to-back trips on the same day and clear all the waste. No spillage of waste during collection and transportation. Collected waste shall not be burnt or disposed/unloaded of at unauthorized locations,” the officer said.
