For a city known for its spicy kari dosas, and flaky parottas, Phil’s Bistro in KK Nagar offers a taste of something different. The ongoing Thai food festival gives locals a chance to explore staples such as Tom yum and pad Thai.

Philip Abraham, the founder of the bistro says, “We introduced this idea as Madurai is still new to Thai cuisine. Most of the ingredients needed for authentic Thai flavours, including sauces and pastes, are imported.”

A small space that serves a range of wholesome, traditional Thai dishes — from soups to desserts — Phil’s Bistro keeps its menu simple yet flavourful. It offers two kinds of soups, spicy tom yum, with either chicken or prawnl; and Tom kha soup, creamy with coconut milk.

Starters include Thai-style tofu and shrimp in a blanket, where the shrimp is wrapped, coated and deep-fried till is crisp on the outside, but remains juicy inside.

For the main course, we order Massaman curry, along with a well balanced shitake mushroom and tofu stir fry.

Try the nasi goreng, rich with the flavours of seafood and served with keropok Thai crackers. The fried rice here is topped with a golden half-boiled egg, along with slices of cucumber and carrot.

For dessert, the menu offers two options: tub tim krob (red ruby), served in a small glass filled with mellow water chestnuts stained red like rubies. It is a good choice for those who prefer less sweetness. Or, dive into the fried ice cream, a dessert with a hot, crunchy outer layer and a cold, sweet interior.

Phil’s Bistro is at 444, 9th Main Rd, Managiri, Madurai. A meal for two is about ₹1500.
