Patna: All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Patna, (AIIMS-P) on Thursday inaugurated a dedicated Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) under its department of general surgery, strengthening critical care facilities for post-operative and high-risk patients in Bihar.The facility was inaugurated by AIIMS-Patna executive director and CEO Brig Dr Raju Agrawal in the presence of medical superintendent Dr Prashant Kumar Singh, head of general surgery Manok Kumar, dean (academics) Punam Bhadani, faculty members, resident doctors and nursing officers.Speaking on the occasion, Agrawal said quality post-operative care is as important as successful surgery and that the new unit will provide round-the-clock monitoring, advanced life-support systems and multidisciplinary care for critically ill patients.Dr Singh said the facility reflects AIIMS-P’s expanding clinical infrastructure and commitment to patient care. Kumar said the SICU has been designed to manage patients requiring intensive monitoring after major and complex surgeries.Bhadani said the facility would also support undergraduate and postgraduate medical education, nursing training and clinical research.The SICU is equipped with advanced patient-monitoring systems, ventilatory support and infection-control measures, and will cater to patients undergoing major abdominal, gastrointestinal, trauma, endocrine and vascular surgeries, among others.
