Woman goes for a job interview, but one question from HR leaves her shocked

A job interview took an uncomfortable turn for Shatakshi Dwivedi when an HR representative asked her about her plans to have a child. The question, which came up after the representative learnt that she was married, has sparked a discussion on social media about women’s personal lives becoming part of the hiring process.Dwivedi shared the incident in an Instagram video, questioning why women still face such questions while trying to build their careers.

HR asks woman about having a baby during interview

According to Dwivedi, the interview began with questions about where she lived and whether travelling to the office would be convenient. She said the commute was not an issue and explained that her husband also travelled to the same area, allowing her to accompany him.The HR representative then asked her, “Do you mind me asking, you’re not planning to have a baby anytime soon, right?”Dwivedi described it as one of the most inappropriate questions she had faced during an interview. She did not name the organisation involved.

Woman questions companies’ claims about women’s empowerment

Reacting to the incident, Dwivedi questioned the gap between companies’ public support for women’s empowerment and the experiences women may face during recruitment. She said, “Then we talk about breaking the glass ceiling. These are the kinds of organisations that talk the most about women’s empowerment.”

Social media users share their experiences

The video prompted several users to share their own experiences of being asked about marriage and children during job interviews. One user highlighted how such questions can follow women at different stages of life, writing, “Women being interviewed – unmarried – when you’re planning to get married?, married – when you’re planning to have baby?, have a baby – how will you manage work and baby??, meaning 22 years se leke till you leave or you’re 50 yr old, interviews will go like this only.. in this society with double standard..”Another user commented, “This happened to me too, they asked me directly about my baby plans, it’s 2026 and women are still asked uncomfortable questions like this.”A third user suggested a direct response to such questions, writing, “The answer should have been ‘Unfortunately I don’t entertain intrusion in my personal life’ or just give a stare and silence.”Disclaimer: This report is based on a social media post and has not been independently verified by The Times of India.
