India’s ₹20,000 Crore Drone Push: Why India Is Betting Big on Indigenous Warfare
India is planning a massive expansion of its drone warfare capabilities, with Army acquisitions of loitering munitions and advanced surveillance systems reportedly worth nearly ₹20,000 crore.
The push comes after Operation Sindoor highlighted the growing role of drones, counter-drone systems, electronic warfare and precision strikes in modern conflict. India has already signed a ₹1,577-crore contract with Tata Advanced Systems and NIBE for loitering-munition systems, including 84 complete systems and 840 munitions.
But buying drones is only one part of the challenge. India wants to build them at home — from airframes and software to motors, batteries, electronics and communication systems. The biggest question: can India reduce its dependence on China for critical drone components? Shreya Chandra decodes.
