BJP functionary shot dead inside home in Saharsa

Patna: BJP Yuva Morcha’s Saharsa district general secretary Abhijeet Singh Rajput alias Raja (26) was found shot dead inside his house in Gautam Nagar under Sadar police station area in Saharsa district on Friday.Police said the preliminary investigation indicated that it was a case of murder rather than death by suicide. The assailants allegedly shot him in the head from close range before escaping through the rear door. Abhijeet had been living alone at the house.He was appointed district general secretary of the BJP Yuva Morcha on Aug 24, 2026. Police said several criminal cases had previously been registered against him at different police stations. Investigators are examining his criminal and personal contacts, recent activities and people who had been in touch with him.The incident came to light after one of Abhijeet’s friends, who had been trying to contact him since Wednesday night, reached his house on Friday. The room was locked from inside and there was no response despite repeated calls. When the friend looked through a window, he saw Abhijeet lying on the bed and informed the police.A police team reached the spot and broke open the door. Abhijeet’s body was found lying on the bed with a pillow over his head. Blood was found in the room and the rear door was open.SDPO Pankaj Kumar Singh said, “The preliminary investigation indicates that this is not a case of death by suicide but murder. The victim was shot in the head from close range and the assailants escaped through the rear gate. A chair was found near the boundary, apparently used to cross the wall.”An FSL team examined the room and surrounding area and collected scientific evidence as part of the investigation.Neighbour Pintu Kumar said he had seen Abhijeet leave his house on Wednesday morning and return in the evening. “After that, I did not see him coming out of or returning to the house,” he said.Police questioned local residents and found that Abhijeet was reportedly at home between 1am and 2am on the night of the incident. Investigators are trying to establish who visited his house on Wednesday night.Family members and relatives have raised the possibility that someone known to Abhijeet could have been involved because the killing took place inside his home. Police have not named any person as a suspect so far.Abhijeet’s ancestral village is in Garhbaruari Ward No. 5 of Supaul district. He was the elder of two brothers. His younger brother lives in Delhi and is preparing for the UPSC examination. Their mother died of illness in 2017, while their father, Harshvardhan Singh, died of cancer in 2018.
