NEW DELHI: A 29-year-old wanted criminal allegedly snatched a service pistol from a Delhi Police head constable and opened fire at a sub-inspector while being brought to the national capital from West Bengal.The incident swiftly prompted police to retaliate and injure the criminal in the leg, news agency PTI reported.The incident took place late Tuesday night on the Yamuna Expressway in the Naujheel police station area of Mathura district.Deputy superintendent of police (Mant) Amarnath Yadav said a special team from Delhi Police’s Jahangirpuri police station had arrested Wasim Akram alias Lambu from Nandigram in West Bengal in connection with a murder case and was bringing him to Delhi.Around midnight, Akram allegedly got down from the vehicle near the expressway on the pretext of urinating and snatched the 9-mm service pistol of head constable Harish before attempting to flee.When police personnel chased him, he allegedly opened fire at them, hitting sub-inspector Ajay Kumar in the arm.Police retaliated, hitting Akram in the leg, following which he fell and was apprehended, PTI reported.Both the injured sub-inspector and the accused were taken to a community health centre and later referred to the district hospital, where they are undergoing treatment.Police recovered the service pistol, along with the magazine and all cartridges, from the accused.A case has been registered against Akram under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Arms Act, police said.(With agency inputs)
