New Delhi: Police were left puzzled after they found two SUVs bearing the same registration number during a verification drive in the city ahead of Independence day, only to discover that both vehicles had been reported stolen. The incident came to light when cops stopped one of the SUVs for checking and found that its registration number matched the details of another vehicle in the police database. A subsequent verification of the vehicle’s chassis and engine numbers revealed discrepancies, prompting a deeper check.Police then traced the second SUV bearing the same registration number and found that that too had been reported stolen. The registration number had allegedly been duplicated and affixed to the vehicles to make identification difficult, police said. Both SUVs were seized.
