NEW DELHI: Delhi govt is considering the reintroduction of a tram system around Shahjahanabad as part of a comprehensive redevelopment plan for Old Delhi. It has also proposed bringing all roads in the Shahjahanabad Redevelopment Corporation (SRDC) area under Public Works Department (PWD) to ensure coordinated planning, uniform standards and faster execution of infrastructure projects.The decisions were taken during a review meeting of SRDC on July 15. The meeting reviewed key projects, including the improvement of SP Mukherjee Marg, including Dangal Maidan parking, redevelopment of arterial roads and inner streets, facade restoration of buildings in Chandni Chowk and Jama Masjid precinct redevelopment, the minutes stated.While a series of detailed presentations were made by each consultant for their respective projects, PWD has been directed to prepare an integrated redevelopment strategy by consolidating all project plans to preserve the architectural and cultural heritage of Old Delhi.“The department will also identify road stretches that can be executed together, prioritise projects that can be completed within a shorter timeline, and ensure that there is no overlap or conflict in infrastructure works,” the minutes stated. “Assessing the feasibility of introducing a tram system around Shahjahanabad to improve sustainable and heritage-sensitive urban mobility should also be done,” it added.Sanjay Bhargava of Chandni Chowk Sarv Vypar Mandal said that while all the projects were approved by Delhi High Court in the past, they could not be implemented. “Now that the above four proposals are finally discussed in a meeting, we expect work to start soon,” he said.Utility ducting, pedestrian pathways and facade restoration will be planned in an integrated manner to avoid overlap, creating a uniform visual and functional identity. “Consultants have been asked to submit revised presentations with detailed work plans and project cost estimates. PWD will also prepare an overview of the SRDC area and obtain details from the power department on the stretches where underground electrical utility works have already been undertaken,” the minutes said.The meeting also directed SRDC to explore the feasibility of transferring all roads within its jurisdiction to PWD. Until such a decision is taken, PWD may constitute a dedicated team to oversee SRDC projects.SRDC was also asked to identify unutilised properties and examine their land use and ownership for setting up outlets, eateries, cafes and tourist-friendly infrastructure under PPP mode.A follow-up review meeting will be held next month.
