Panaji: Two people died in an accident at the exit of the newly opened six-lane Porvorim elevated flyover on its second day of operation.A car hit a scooter from behind which was proceeding in the same direction, pushing it into a truck entering the national highway proceeding towards Atal Setu.The two-wheeler rider’s children were waiting for their father to return home so they could travel to their native place for Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations, Porvorim PI Tukaram Chavan said.The Porvorim elevated corridor was opened to the public on Friday evening and within 24 hours the first fatal accident occurred.Chavan said that the accident took place at around 6pm as the car driver drove the same in a rash and negligent manner endangering human lives while proceeding from Guirim to Panaji via the new elevated corridor.“When he reached opposite Neo Majestic Hotel, he dashed a two-wheeler on its rear side and then a truck, due to which scooter rider and one occupant of the car died,” the PI said.He said that the deceased scooter rider has been identified as Sarvesh Vengurlekar, a 41-year-old native of Maharashtra, and the car occupant who succumbed to the accident is 22-year-old Amita Salgaonkar, a resident of Siolim.Chavan said that the car driver has been identified as a 22-year-old Moira resident, Raunak Chari. He was injured in the accident and shifted to GMC. The PI said that another occupant of the car, 9-year-old Sangita, was also injured in the accident and has been admitted to GMC.In July, TOI had reported that Goa police traffic cell had asked PWD to install traffic signals at six junctions on the Mapusa-Panaji stretch of the elevated corridor and implement a series of safety measures before opening the corridor for traffic.
